Virginia State Police say drunk driving combined with slippery road conditions from this year’s first winter storm were the cause of a fatal single-vehicle crash in Sussex County that killed a Surry County man.

Police say 32-year-old Timothy Lee Tanner of Dendron was unrestrained and died upon impact when he lost control of his 2003 Ford F-150 pickup truck and struck a tree just after midnight on Jan. 6 in the 7300 block of Birch Island Road in Wakefield.

Police say Tanner was driving too fast for roadway conditions and alcohol also appears to be a contributing factor.
