Isle of Wight County Schools named Deana Hubbell, a third-grade teacher at Carrsville Elementary School, as its divisionwide teacher of the year.
She was also selected as Carrsville Elementary School’s Teacher of the Year and the division’s elementary school teacher of the year. She was surprised on Jan. 15 at her school with the announcement. Hubbell will serve as the division’s representative in the Virginia Teacher of the Year program.
Before joining IWCS, she taught for 16 years as a third-grade teacher and an instructional technology specialist with Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Originally from Michigan, she obtained a bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies from Old Dominion University and a master’s degree in mathematical leadership from Regent University.
Throughout her 21-year career, she has held many leadership positions in her schools. She currently serves on the school leadership team, has been a new teacher mentor, and participated in the Virginia Literacy Act (VLA) Core Curriculum Committee. Hubbell said she loves that no year in education is exactly the same as any other, and that she strives to find ways to inspire her students with relevant and engaging learning opportunities.
In addition to teaching, she assists with her school’s social media and co-chairs students participating in the annual Great Computer Challenge sponsored by local radio station WHRO. Hubbell currently resides in Carrsville with her husband, and is a mother to her two adult sons.
