Editor, The Smithfield Times:

I am heartbroken by the loss of Isle of Wight County Supervisor William McCarty. 

He was a true servant of the public and a committed leader to the citizens of Isle of Wight County. He led with intelligence and compassion and was the leader we needed for the time that he was with us. 

Under his diligent watch our community has thrived and become the envy of the Greater Hampton Roads/Western Tidewater area. His contributions to our local government as well as his contributions to the spiritual health of our citizens deserve to be commended. 

I send my prayers and condolences to his family as well as his congregation. He will be sorely missed.
