The Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia Powwow in Surry County on September 18-19, 2021 will no longer be held in person this year, the tribe announced Monday.

The event was set to take place Sept. 18-19.

Instead, the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia will host its annual powwow virtually on Sept. 18 via Facebook Live, the tribe stated.

“Above all, the Nottoway people seek to ensure the health and safety of all those planning to attend,” the announcement stated. “Therefore, the Nottoway Tribal Council and Powwow Committee agreed that the risk to the tribe, indigenous communities, and the general public was too great to proceed in person.”

The Facebook Live event will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Sept. 18. Called “Beyond Powwow,” the event will include a variety of content including drumming, dancing, craft demonstrations, history, music, poetry and more.

The tribe will partner with the Hampton University Mobile Vaccine Unit, The American Indian Mothers, Inc./Health Resources & Services Administration, Communities for Immunity, and the American Lung Association to provide vaccines, COVID-19 testing, and masks at the Nottoway Indian Community House/Interpretive Center located at 23186 Main St., Capron, during the Facebook Live event.

There will be a $20 gift card for all persons presenting with a valid completed vaccine card.
