Christian Biernot was 2-for-3 with a double, three total bases, two RBIs and one run scored as Isle of Wight Academy’s varsity baseball team defeated The Blessed Sacrament Huguenot School 13-2 on April 14 to stay undefeated for the season.
Trevor Mason, of the Chargers, was 1-for-2, scored a run and drove in a pair. Winning pitcher Alex Holt tossed two innings of scoreless relief, allowing just a hit while striking out seven and walking none.
The win raised IWA’s record to a perfect 12-0.
The Chargers are ranked second among Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II schools, according to standings published on the statistical website Maxpreps.com, second only to Highland School of Warrenton. IWA is the No. 11 team in all divisions of Virginia high schools, public or private, reporting results to the same website.
In limited playing time, Jake Lineberry leads the Chargers in batting average, at .692, as well as on-base percentage, at .765. Everyday player Payton Shipman is second, at .655 and .738, respectively. Shipman also leads the club in homers, with five.
Dustin Moon has nabbed a team-high eight stolen bases, while Zach Rusinak leads the team in ERA at 2.76.
Rusinak had four hits and led IWA to a 24-1 win over Broadwater Academy on April 13.
Rusinak singled in the first, doubled in the second, singled in the fourth and doubled in the fifth.
IWA plated 19 runs in the first inning, with Mason, Shipman, Kody Kosiorek, Lineberry, Rusinak and Trent Holland all driving in runs in the inning.
Rusinak also claimed the win for Isle of Wight on the mound, allowing two hits and a run over four innings, striking out seven.
Moon and James Thompson each had three hits and combined for five RBIs, as Isle of Wight defeated the visiting Seahorses of Christchurch School 20-0 on April 12.
Shipman was 1-for-1 with a three-run homer, and Lineberry was 2-for-2, including a grand slam — the first round-tripper of his IWA career.
Holland pitched four innings to earn the win, allowing only a hit.
The Chargers ran roughshod over Tidewater Academy 20-4 on April 11.
The IWA softball squad dropped to 3-4 after an 11-1 defeat to Nansemond-Suffolk Academy on April 12.
