Bobby BlackHat concert rescheduled for June 3

Bluesman Bobby BlackHat is once again set to kick off the Smithfield’s 2022 Summer Concert Series this Friday, June 3.

The threat of severe weather postponed the return of the concert series last week, when BlackHat was originally to perform. Gospel singer and Chesapeake native “Slater Joel” Johnson, this week’s scheduled performer, is battling an illness — giving BlackHat another chance to take the stage.

BlackHat will perform at 7 p.m. on the front lawn of The Smithfield Times, 228 Main St. The concert series will continue weekly on Fridays through Labor Day weekend.

The series had been canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and had an abbreviated run last year. This year’s series marks the first full season since 2019.

All concerts will now start at 7 p.m. to accommodate families with children. In prior years, the concerts have started at 8 p.m.

All concerts are free. Attendees should bring a lawn chair or blanket.
