Windsor High School’s varsity golf team has continued to be outstanding this season, and the Lady Dukes varsity volleyball team has also shown notable strength.

On Monday, Sept. 12, the Windsor golf team stayed undefeated in 2022 Tri-Rivers District play by producing a nine-hole score of 168, besting five other teams competing at the Emporia Country Club.

Coming in second was Greensville County High School with a score of 194, Southampton High School took third with a 238, Appomattox Regional Governor’s School was fourth with a 240, Sussex Central High School was fifth with a 242, and Franklin High School was sixth with a 254.

On Wednesday, Sept. 7, Windsor’s golf team was victorious in a five-team field at Cypress Cove Country Club in Franklin with a score of 186. Greensville County came in second with a 214, Southampton was third with a 217, ARGS shot a 252, and Franklin shot a 259.

Windsor is now 8-0 overall, including a 7-0 mark in district play.

The Lady Dukes volleyball team fell 3-2 to visiting Bruton High School on Monday, but Windsor topped visiting Southampton on Thursday, Sept. 8, in another match that went to five sets.

“The Dukes were down 0-2 and fought back and won the next three sets,” Windsor Athletic Director Chuck Parrish said. “The Castle was packed, which created a great atmosphere.”

The Lady Dukes’ set scores against Southampton were as follows: 17-25, 21-25, 25-6, 25-15 and 15-9.

On Wednesday, Windsor soundly defeated visiting Sussex Central 25-5, 25-1, 25-7.

The Lady Dukes were involved in yet another five-set match Sept. 1 when they prevailed against visiting Nansemond River High School 25-20, 25-20, 9-25, 20-25, 15-13.

Windsor entered its road match against Franklin on Tuesday, Sept. 13, with a 4-2 overall record, including a 2-0 mark in the district.

The Windsor junior varsity girls volleyball team won 2-1 against Bruton on Monday to take its overall record to 3-2. The girls fell 2-1 to Southampton on Thursday but beat Nansemond River 2-1 on Sept. 1.

On Friday, Sept. 9, the Windsor varsity football team once again proved it can put points on the board, but it was ultimately unable to keep up with visiting Middlesex High School, falling 43-28.

The Dukes’ point production represented a clear rebound, though, from their Sept. 2 game against host King and Queen Central High School. After putting up more than 30 points in their home opener Aug. 26, the Dukes were shut out by the Royal Tigers on Sept. 2 — 58-0. 

Windsor (0-3) will look to get its first win of the year when it hosts Northampton High School (1-2) on Friday, Sept. 16. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Also on Wednesday, the Windsor varsity boys cross country team placed second in the district meet at Franklin High School. Individually for the Dukes, junior Peyton Goetz placed fifth, freshman Ethan Brinkley-Sawyer placed seventh, and sophomore Caden Pierce placed eighth.

For the Windsor varsity girls cross country team, senior Chloe Griffin placed second individually.

Parrish noted that Wednesday was a “great day for WHS athletics.”
