Rain on Oct. 4 turned Smithfield’s National Night Out festivities into a night in, with activities moving to Main Street Baptist Church. Smithfield’s Police Department has participated in the nationwide community building campaign since 2002. The event is intended to promote positive interactions between residents and law enforcement. It’s traditionally held on the first Tuesday in August. Smithfield, however, began observing the date on the first Tuesday in October in 2021 when temperatures are cooler.
