Amparo Hernandez Jones, 87, of Smithfield, passed away on Friday, December 9, 2022. She was the daughter of the late Octaviano Hernandez Garcia and Leonora Hernandez Garcia. She is survived by her daughters, Norma Jones-Ives (Clayton) and Michelle Steele (Shawn); grandchildren, Clayton and Claire Ives; her younger sister, Marcela Hernandez Hernandez, the last surviving sibling of 6. In her early twenties, she immigrated from Mexico to Southern California where she held various jobs throughout the years. She was a loving and selfless mother, grandmother and friend and devoted her life to taking care of her family and others. She was a devout Catholic with an unshakeable faith, and not only did she pray for everyone she met, but also for a better world. She was fondly known as Lita as her grandchildren had difficulty pronouncing Abuelita and those who were fortunate enough to know her adored and loved her. She had a beautiful smile, was an amazing cook, never had a mean word to say, and loved everyone she met. She truly was an angel walking among us and will be greatly missed. A Mass of Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, 11 a.m. at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 300 Smithfield Blvd, Smithfield, VA 23430. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Voices for Kids CASA Program of Southeast Virginia at www.vfkcasa.org in Amparo’s honor.
