Just short: Smithfield High baseball, boys soccer teams fall in state championship games

Smithfield High School’s quests for state titles in baseball and boys soccer ended Saturday with losses in the Class 4A championship games in Spotsylvania County.
The soccer squad lost a 1-0 heartbreaker to Bay Rivers District rival Jamestown, while the baseball team lost 9-1 to Hanover, which won its second straight state title.
The SHS soccer squad finished 16-7-1. The baseball Packers finished 14-11 after an improbable run to the regional championship.
Smithfield sent four spring sports teams to states for the first time in recent history: baseball, softball and boys and girls soccer.
