Surry County supervisors have authorized the county’s animal shelter to offer discounted adoption fees.
The supervisors voted unanimously on July 6 to approve a slate of new animal shelter fees, which had last been revised in 2018. Newly included in the county’s fee ordinance is language allowing “promotional discounts at the direction of the animal services supervisor in consultation with the sheriff.” Second and additional companion animals, but not livestock, now qualify for a 50% discounted adoption fee.
According to the adopted ordinance, the new fees and discounts are intended to account for the increased cost of food and veterinary care since 2018, and to bring the Surry County Animal Shelter in line with surrounding jurisdictions.

- Dog license, neutered: $5
- Dog license, unneutered: $10
- Kennel fee, 20 or fewer dogs: $30
- Kennel fee, more than 20 dogs: $50
- Impoundment fee, companion animal: $25
- Impoundment fee, livestock: $50
