Letter – Writer owes women apology

Editor, The Smithfield Times:

After reading Frank Hall’s letter “Says Luter done with Smithfield” (Aug. 9), I had to ask myself, “Are we living in the ’60s?” No, indeed we are not, but it appears that Mr. Hall may have gotten stuck there. Thanks for reminding us that sexism is alive and well.

He stated, and I quote, “… I couldn’t stand listening to woman after woman parade up to the podium to say whatever was on their minds.” Perhaps Mr. Hall should have “paraded” in on time to the meeting and listened to what was actually said. Then he would have realized that many of the speakers, men and women, came to voice their legitimate concerns in a forum that allows it.

I clearly heard more than a few citizens state they were not opposed to the project, just certain elements of it. And they expressed their gratitude for all of the wonderful contributions that Joe Luter III has made to our town.

It is my opinion that Mr. Hall should publicly apologize for his offensive and insulting letter. This is 2023, not 1963, and we’ve come too far to allow something like this letter to go unchecked.
