Surry County’s School Board will see two new faces come January.
Roxanne Marr-Shears defeated challenger Sue Fibish with just under 63% of more than 600 votes to Fibish’s just over 37% in their contested race for the board’s Carsley District seat.
First-time candidate Sophenia Pierce was also elected in an uncontested bid for the Bacon’s Castle District seat with 603 votes to three write-ins.
Incumbents Laura Ruffin, Valencia Williams and Faye Perkins were each reelected in their own uncontested races for the respective Claremont, Surry and Dendron districts, all with more than 97% of vote totals ranging from 570 to 634.
The totals include election day voting, early in-person votes and absentee ballots but not provisional ballots.
Neither Marr-Shears nor Fibish immediately responded to The Smithfield Times’ request for comments.
