The Smithfield Packer varsity and junior varsity wrestling teams both took to the mat this weekend to start the season off at the Heavy Hitting Hammer Holiday Classic, sponsored by Deep Creek and Churchland high schools.  

The tournament was held Dec. 1-2 at Churchland High School and featured 35 teams from four states.  

Led by Head Coach Brandon Voros, a Smithfield wrestling alum, who assumed the interim head coach position during the middle of 2022-2023 season, the varsity team had two medalists and took 15th place.

Nashuan Harden (120 pounds) placed fourth overall going 5-2 on the weekend, scoring three pins and one technical fall.  

Senior Ronald Davis (138. pounds) placed fifth going 4-2 at the event, scoring all four victories by pin. 

Falling one round short of medaling, senior Logan Neal (144 pounds) finished the tourney 4-2, scoring all his wins by pin.  

For the JV team, junior Nicholas White (144 pounds) took fourth place going 3-2 at the event, also scoring all three of his wins by pin.  

Varsity will return to the mat on at 6 p.m. Dec. 13  to host a tri-meet against Grafton and Warhill. Wrestling action will be in the Smithfield High School gymnasium.  

Spectators are reminded SHS has moved to a cashless process for purchasing tickets to high school athletic events. To purchase tickets, all spectators must go to the GoFan website to digitally purchase their tickets and print or show them on their phone to the ticket counter.
