Letter – Dreadful idea in Surry

Editor, The Smithfield Times:
“Should Surry County supervisors allow themselves, but no one else, to carry concealed weapons during board meetings?” It’s alarming to see such an extreme proposal being considered in our local community by our elected officials — our neighbors.
Allowing only supervisors with concealed-carry permits to bring weapons into board meetings not only distracts from the pressing local issues that need our attention but also risks further dividing our community. Our elected officials deserve to be approached with respect, and the public should be able to voice their opinions without fear or intimidation.
Decisions at the local level of government most directly shape the future of our community. Imagine how much better off we could be if these decisions are made based on community needs, sound data and evidence — rather than on who shouts the loudest or carries the biggest gun.
