Letter – Leave Farmers Market as is

Editor, The Smithfield Times:

Regarding the Grange and “The Great and Awesome” Farmers Market, I feel strongly that this idea is way out of proportion with the Town of Smithfield and Isle of Wight County.

There are a number of farmers that participate in the current Farmers Market who would not be able to afford a stall in the “New and Improved” indoor, always-open farmers market. I doubt that they would have the time to take away from their farms to cover their stalls full time.

I hope that there are others who agree that the current Farmers Market is perfectly sufficient for our town and our county. It has served us well for many years and it can serve us just fine for many years to come. Let’s save the taxpayers’ money for a more useful and sensible project.

My other concern is in regard to the Turner Drive roundabout. Spending over a million dollars on this is ridiculous. I have friends in other parts of the country where roundabouts have been built and they do nothing but complain about how absurd and inconvenient they are. They tell me that people just cannot learn the proper way to use them. Hard to believe but true.

What is wrong with a simple stop light with a couple of turn lanes? No need to get all fancy and complicated.
