Virginia Department of Transportation contractor crews are scheduled to begin daily alternating single-lane and shoulder closures on Carrollton Boulevard, also known as Route 17, starting Jan. 20 between James River Trail and Brewers Neck Boulevard as part of the Nike Park Road extension.
According to VDOT, the majority of the lane closures will occur overnight beginning as early as 7 p.m. and lasting through 5 a.m. with limited intermittent daytime closures possible from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The closures will allow crews to safely install utility and drainage connections underneath and parallel to the roadway in preparation for the construction of the new intersection and turn lanes being added to connect Nike Park Road to Route 17.
Access to all commercial businesses on Carrollton Boulevard will be maintained at all times.
The utility and intersection preparatory work associated with these closures is estimated to be complete as early as this spring. Additional construction activities and lane closures related to the new intersection will be necessary later in construction, according to VDOT.
The $8.3 million project, awarded to Williamsburg-based Branscome, will construct a nearly one-mile, two-lane extension of Nike Park between Reynolds Drive and Route 17 with an adjacent extension of the bicycle and pedestrian path that spans from Battery Park Road in Smithfield to Nike Park.
Additional improvements include a new right-turn lane from southbound Route 17 to Nike Park Road, new turn lanes from Nike Park Road to Route 17, and a new traffic signal installed at the intersection. Work will also include updating traffic signage and relocating utilities. The Nike Park Road extension is estimated to be complete as early as summer 2026.
All construction work is weather- and schedule-dependent; therefore, this schedule is subject to change.
