Editor, Smithfield Times

Sixty years ago, Jesse Scott, owner, publisher, reporter, typesetter, photographer (and, if truth be known, probably janitor) of The Smithfield Times, took time from his family on Christmas Day to be photographer for a wedding.

When Frank’s plans to join the Air Force didn’t work out we, for some reason we can’t remember other than that I love Christmas, decided to have a Christmas wedding instead of a spring ceremony. This must have given my mother many added gray hairs, but she took it all in stride.

So, on Christmas Day 1955, in Oak Grove Methodist Church near Surry, filled with family and friends, Frank and I were married. We are to this day thankful for Mr. Scott’s giving up time from his family to record our special day. And we are equally thankful for all our family and friends who have been with us through the years, through the good and the bad. There is a lot to be said for small towns, putting down roots and staying close. There’s not much we’d change after these 60 years.

The highlight of it all is of course our three children, their wonderful spouses, 12 grandchildren and spouses and four great-grandchildren. We have been so blest. God is good. And we can thank Mr. Jesse Scott for our being able to show our little ones where it all began. Merry Christmas to all.
