Get ready for a scary good time as downtown Hamtown comes alive with witches, ghosts, vampires — and probably a Pokemon or two.

Smithfield’s annual Safe Trick or Treat begins at 5:30p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31. Main Street merchants and residents, as well as local organizations, join in the fun by handing out candy to costumed children and their parents as they show off their Halloween finery.

Competitive pumpkin carvers are invited to compete in the Jack-o’-lantern competition. Drop off pumpkins from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at The Smithfield Times on Main Street. Pumpkins must include the carver’s name clearly printed and should have candles inside for night judging.

The costume contest judging begins at 6:30 p.m. for all ages on the gazebo stage in front of The Smithfield Times building. Babies to adults are invited to compete in categories to be determined that evening. Inexpensive prizes, provid- ed by merchants, will be provided for costume and Jack-o’-lantern winners.

Lemonade and cookies will also be served.

As the fun subsides on Main Street, Trick-or-Treaters traditionally head over to Grace Street, where residents go to great lengths to create a storybook Halloween experience with talking pumpkins, large yard displays and sound effects and a foggy atmosphere.

The town of Smithfield restricts Trick or Treating to children age 12 and under. Safe Trick or Treat is sponsored by The Smithfield Times and the Smithfield Police Department.
