Smithfield Town Manager Brian Thrower resigned from the position just days after being convicted of a DUI in Isle of Wight General District Court.
He had been on the job for a little more than a year.
On Oct. 1, Town Council held an hour-long closed session meeting concerning town staff and other matters, according to Council member Randy Pack. The topics discussed were confidential.
By the next morning, the town manager had announced his resignation, which, according to Pack, was effective immediately. {mprestriction ids=”1,2,3,4,5,6″}
Town department heads were informed of the resignation on Wednesday, and Smithfield Mayor Carter Williams has stepped in to fulfill immediate manager duties as Town Council begins a search for an interim town manager, and eventually, a permanent one, according to Pack.
Members of Town Council have been tightlipped pertaining Thrower’s resignation in ensuing days.
“The official comment has to be no comment,” said Pack, adding confidential personnel matters should remain confidential.
On Sept. 26, Thrower appeared in Isle of Wight County General District Court and pled no contest to a first offense DUI charge dated May 17.
Town Council member Mike Smith said that Thrower’s position wasn’t discussed on Oct. 1 during the closed session meeting.
He added that he found out about Thrower’s resignation Wednesday morning when Williams called him and told him about it. {/mprestriction}
