Election Day is Tuesday and all seats in the statehouse are up for a vote, as are three seats on the Isle of Wight Board of Supervisors and School Board. 

Many local positions, however, are unopposed.

Smithfield Supervisor Dick Grice is being challenged by businessman Timmie Edwards. Newport District Supervisor William McCarty faces retired engineer Rick Gillerlain. 

Grice and McCarty are seeking a second term. 

Windsor District Supervisor Joel Acree is unopposed. {mprestriction ids=”1,2,3,4,5,6″}

Vying for a seat on the School Board to represent the Smithfield District is current Town Council member and former School Board member Denise Tynes. Matthew Thomas, who has a doctorate in microbiology, is also running for the seat being vacated by outgoing representative Kirstin Cook. 

Lawrence Rotruck, a former Isle of Wight teacher, is taking on incumbent Newport District School Board representative Vicky Hulick, who is seeking a second term. 

Windsor District School Board representative Julia Perkins is unopposed. 

Unopposed this year is Commonwealth’s Attorney Georgette Phillips, who is seeking a second term. Isle of Wight County Sheriff James Clarke is running for his first full four-year term after winning a special election last July. 

Also unopposed is Commissioner of Revenue Gerald Gwaltney and Treasurer Judy Wells.

William Gwaltney Jr. and J. Larry Darden are running for the two Soil and Water Conservation Peanut District director positions. 

On the state level, all seats in the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates are up for grabs, in a year that could determine which party predominates in either house. 

Del. Emily Brewer, R-64, who represents all of Isle of Wight County in the House of Delegates, is seeking a second term. Democrat and computer scientist Michele Joyce is challenging Brewer for the seat. 

Isle of Wight has three senators spread among its five electoral districts.

Sen. Tommy Norment Jr., R-3, is on the ballot in the Newport and Smithfield districts, as well as some precincts in the Hardy and Carrsville and Windsor. districts. The Senate majority leader is challenged by Democrat and business owner Herb Jones Jr.

Republican Sen. John Cosgrove Jr. is opposed by Democrat Rebecca Raveson for the 14th Senate District. Cosgrove and Raveson are on the ballot in portions of the Windsor, Hardy and Carrsville districts. 

Sen. Louise Lucas, D-18th is unopposed. She represents voters in portions of the Windsor, Hardy and Carrsville districts.  {/mprestriction}
