Gerald “Popeye” Franklyn Howell

Gerald “Popeye” Franklyn Howell, 80, of Smithfield, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2020 at his residence.  He was the son of the late Ellenor Durward Howell and Lois Spivey Howell.  He is survived by his wife, Donna Mingin Howell; daughters, Teresa L. Dove (Randolph) and Elinore H. Edwards (Matt); sons, Brian R. Howell and James D. Howell (Christina); grandchildren, Erica, Ricky, Michael, Zoie, Gavin, Alex and Jacob; great grandchildren, Jennie, Shelby and Mikey; sister, Carolyn H. Hyman (Bernie); brother, Maurice D. Howell (Bonnie); a host of nieces and nephews; and his favorite two cats. Gerald graduated from Smithfield High School and proudly served in the U. S. Army. He was a charter member of the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, and had a long career as a welder at the Surry Power Station.  A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 13, 2020, 2 p.m. at Little’s Funeral Home, Smithfield, with burial to follow in St. Luke’s Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6-7 p.m. at the funeral home.  In lieu of flower the family suggest donations be made to the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, PO Box 97, Smithfield, VA 23430.
