Hog Jog 2020 and Souper Saturday, have been canceled, organizers recently announced. Both events were scheduled for Oct. 10.
“Due to the COVID-19 virus, our decision was based on protecting the participants and spectators on race day,” organizers said in a statement shared with The Smithfield Times. The annual 5K run and walk follows a course through historic downtown Smithfield and the adjacent countryside. Proceeds from the event benefit the Christian Outreach Program.
Souper Saturday is a community soup lunch program that raises money to provide financial assistance for wintertime heating. Hundreds of people from local churches typically participate, according to the event’s website.
Organizers said they plan to hold the events next year.
